Mukiya PostNew Westminster, B.C. – The Quest Men’s basketball team earned the first league win in the program’s history Saturday versus Douglas College 77-72.  The chance to break a 21 game losing streak did not look good early for the Kermodes as Douglas raced out to a 12-0 lead in the first three minutes.

“We have been talking about coming out and competing for the entire forty minutes, which has been a struggle for us all year,” said Quest coach Sean Shook.  “After we took the early time-out, the guys really relaxed and executed the game plan we had talked about.”

John Pankratz (Brookswood/Langley, B.C.) kept the Kermodes in the game in the first quarter with 10 points and knocked down two 3 pointers in the second quarter to help stake Quest to a 39-35 half time lead.

After the half, Quest expanded their lead to nine early in the third quarter.  Bryce Froberg (Meridian/Bellingham, WA) scored 8 of his 16 points in the frame.  Quest led the rest of the way until Royal’s guard Kevin Jackel hit a 3 to put Douglas up 66-64.  Pankratz answered on the next possession with a 3 of his own to restore a Quest lead which they would not give up the rest of the way.

“The guys did a good job of answering every run that Douglas had.  Even after Jackel hit the 3 to give them a brief lead, we came right back and executed to get John an open shot which he buried,” commented Shook.  “We also got some great minutes off the bench from Mukiya Post (Oak Bay/Victoria, B.C.) and Brodan Robertson (Carson Graham/North Vancouver, B.C.).  Both of those guys came in to give us a lift when we were struggling early.”

Douglas was led in scoring by the 19 points of Jobair Satori.  Kevin Jackel and Drew Slaght chipped in with 17 and 14 respectively.

Pankratz led the Kermodes with 22 points, hitting on 5 of 8 three pointers.  Froberg led the team in rebounds with 10, to go with his 6 assists and 16 points.  Robertson had 8 rebounds in only 13 minutes of work.  Post poured in 17 points on 8 of 13 shooting off the bench.

Quest will next welcome the Langara College Falcons (1-3 League/2-7 Overall) next Friday and Saturday night to Squamish for a key league battle.
