Women's Basketball on their way to CCAA NATIONALS

Kermodes’ quest ends in gold

In the women’s gold medal game, the Quest University Kermodes took on the tournament hosts, the Douglas College Royals. The Kermodes had soundly taken the season series against the Royals 3-0, but after the run the Royals had been on, they knew not to take the #5 seed lightly. In order to get to the final, the Royals had upset both the #4 seed, the Capilano Blues, and the #1 seed, the Vancouver Island University Mariners. The Kermodes, however, had been on a run of their own, winning 10 of their last 11 games (including the tournament). When the dust settled on the evening’s action, Quest had made that 11 of their last 12.

The first quarter saw a 10-point run by the Kermodes put the Royals in a bit of a hole. Down 16-6, and later, 23-12, it appeared as if Douglas might fall out of contention early. But by half, thanks to some clutch play from Adelia Paul and Nanaya Miki, the hosts were down only 28-24. In the third quarter, however, Quest started to pull away. Despite the efforts of the Royals, the quarter ended with the Kermodes sitting on a comfortable 18-point lead after outscoring Douglas 27-13. The Royals tried to come back in the final frame, but it just wasn’t to be, as Quest took the game, and their hard-earned gold medal, 69-52. Aimee Johnston took player of the game for Quest with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Adelia Paul received the honour for Douglas with seven points, five rebounds, and seven assists.

Shayna Cameron – Quest University Kermodes

CCAA Nationals will be held at Champlain College Saint-Lambert in Saint-Lambert, Quebec. March 13,14,15.

February 26, 2013 – Men’s and Women’s Basketball

Squamish, BC – Quest University Athletics is proud to announce this year’s winners of the PACWEST basketball All-Star awards.  Following the first ever season of dual playoff qualification, women’s basketball elite includes Delainee Behrns (2nd Team) and men’s basketball winners Jose Colorado (2nd Team) as well as Denzel Laguerta (All-Rookie Team).  All three Kermodes will be recognized at this year’s provincial tournament at Camosun College and begin the road to nationals on Thursday, February 28th.

Behrns, a fourth year player out of Emerald Park, SK, finished the regular season 7th in scoring and 4th in assists, leading the Kermodes to a 4th place playoff seeding.  Colorado led the nation and league in scoring for much of the season, finishing with an average just under 20 points per game.  Laguerta, a first year guard, infused the men’s program with a full-throttle energy on both ends of the floor.

The women will tip-off their playoffs at 1pm in Victoria, BC on Thursday against Kwantlen before the men face hosts, Camosun, at 8pm.  You can check out the championship website here and follow updates on Twitter/Facebook throughout the weekend.
