The Quest Kermodes dropped two tough road games this past weekend against the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George. The trip up to Prince George is known to be the toughest in the British Columbia Colleges Athletics Association. “It is a tough place to play,” commented Head Coach Todd Jordan, a UNBC Alumni. “They always get good crowds and as a visiting team you are not only battling their team but also the pro-UNBC environment and the other factors that come along with being on a long road trip.”
The Timberwolves have been to the BCCAA championship game in both of the last two years and won the provincial championship in 2008. They indeed provided a tough opponent for Quest. On Friday night, the game started off with a Charlotte Lau three and the teams went back and forth with the Timberwolves taking an eight point lead into the half. The third quarter saw the Kermodes self destruct and allow UNBC to begin an 18-0 run that was spurred by their star guards Kady Dandeneau and Christine Kennedy. The Kermodes showed character in battling back late in the game but it was too little too late as they were defeated 72-60. Charlotte Lau (John Oliver/Vancouver, BC) paced Quest with 17 points while Dandeneau scored 19 for UNBC.
The Saturday night game saw the Kermodes come out in very strong form. The adjustments made to battle the Timberwolves man to man defense appeared to be working and the first quarter ended in a 21-21 deadlock. It was in the second quarter that the wheels fell off for Quest. UNBC came out in a high pressure half court zone defense and the Kermodes were not able to respond to the change. Despite timeouts called by Coach Jordan, the Timberwolves went on a 27-4 run in the quarter and put the game out of reach. “Our girls showed a bit of inexperience there and panicked under the pressure. They are a very strong team and they came at us in waves as soon as they sensed our loss of composure,” said Jordan. “I’m hoping we will take some lessons from the experience that will help us later on in the season.” The Kermodes did show character in fighting back from a 30 point deficit to make the loss more respectable at 14 points with a final score of 62-76 . Leading scorer for the Kermodes was Krystal Schouten (River East/Winnipeg, MB) with 17. She was also effective in pulling down 10 rebounds. Kady Dandeneau had 24 for the Timberwolves.
