December 15, 2009 - Women's Basketball Winter on the West Coast is mild compared to most other regions in Canada. For this reason, homeless people head to cities like Vancouver to pass the winter. However, it is still cold and unpleasant for those who must sleep on the streets. There is no solution to homelessness but there are ways we can help. Last week, members of the Quest Women's Basketball Team looked to do their part to help the homeless of East Vancouver. On Monday, December 7th, 2009, Brittany Harteveld, Courtney Harpur, and Rachel Poon travelled to Vancouver to take part in an event called “Be the Light”. This event was a first, as it was developed this year by one of their peers, Kevan D’agostino. The girls, along with about ten other volunteers, collected as much warm clothing as they could and headed to Life Skills Community Center in East Vancouver. They organized the clothing according to gender and size and distributed the clothing to a long line of homeless people eager for something warm to wear. “It was a great success,” commented Courtney Harpur. Brittany Harteveld stated, “It was awesome that the three of us could be apart of this event. It was a great experience and I will definitely help out again in the future." The Kermodes are back in action on January 7th when they face off against the Columbia Bible College Bearcats in a contest on the road. The game tips off at 7 pm. |
