Balanced Attack Ignites Kermodes as They Open PACWEST Play PDF Print E-mail
Squamish, BC -  On Friday night, the Quest University Kermodes welcomed the Langara Falcons to the Kave for the Home opener of the PACWEST season.  A close first quarter saw the lead change hands 5 times as both teams searched for an advantage.  Towards the end of the first quarter and extending into the second  the Kermodes applied stifling defensive pressure which helped them go on a 20-6 run as they jumped out to a 38-20 halftime lead.

In all 8 Kermodes hit the scoresheet lead by a trio in double figures.  Katrin Sandbichler had 14 points, Maja Smilijic had 13 on 3/5 shooting from beyond the arc and Cynthia Lau recored 12  while leading the Kermodes defensively.

The Falcons got 15 points from Denise Busayong and 14 points and 11 rebounds from Carling Muir.

“We came out with a solid effort tonight.  The girls took what we had been working on all week and really applied it on the defensive end.  If we continue to improve and take better care of the basketball we have a very realistic chance of realizing all our goals this season,” stated Head Coach Mike Woollard on the Kermodes Victory.

On Saturday night the Kermodes entertained the Kwantlen Eagles.  A quick blast out of the gate sparked by an attacking offense and an equally aggressive defense powered the Spirit Bears to a quick 11-0 lead.  Not to be outdone the visiting Eagles showed resistance and after a well placed timeout composed themselves to go on their own 8-0 run.  Recomposed themselves, the Kermodes settled in to a 25-18 1st quarter lead which they pushed to 42-29 at half.  From there the Kermodes cruised to the 80-61 win.

Delainee Behrns lead the Kermodes with 19 points on 7 of 13 shooting including 3/6 from behind the arc.  Katryn Sandbichler and Shayna Cameron chipped in with 16 and 13 points respectively.   Quest was lead in rebounding by Nicola Hitchcock who recorded 9 and Kelsey Cooper chipped in with 8.

For the Eagles, Anna Work had 20 points on 8 of 15 shooting including 3 of 4 from three.

The Kermodes are now 2-1 in PACWEST play.  They will next face the 2-0 University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves at the Kave on Friday night.  Tipoff is 6pm.  The Timberwolves who are currently ranked 11th in the country enter the cave with a 2-0 record in PACWEST play having outscored their opponents by a combined score of 206-73.  “They will be a terrific test for us.  The Timberwolves are always one of the leaders in the PACWEST and a great measuring stick for our program,” commented Mike Woollard.
